Do elite soccer players perform better or worse in high-stakes matches?

Gabriel Magalhães after missing the decisive penalty against PSG, 2026

Désiré Doué, scoring the decisive penalty against Liverpool, 2025

Using 373 Matches, 9,836 Shots, 2,967 Players, and 7 Competitions, this project builds a custom database from two public datasets. I then use SQL to answer a question that sits at the intersection of sports analytics and performance psychology: does competitive pressure measurably change how elite players perform? Conclusions include that experience is statistically significant, as well as uncovering who are the players and teams that perform most above their level when pressure is highest.
